Marin Schools Network raises $830,000 for programs

Marin Public Schools will share $830,074 for arts, literacy, technology and health programs through SchoolsRule-Marin, a network of school foundations.

The distributions were announced Thursday at the organization’s 13th annual awards ceremony in San Rafael. Funding goes to foundations and parent-led groups serving Marin school districts.

“I think we’re right where we were before in terms of fundraising before the pandemic,” John Carroll, the county’s superintendent of schools, said at the event. “The energy is very high. I think SchoolsRule is doing a great job, just like before.

Donations to SchoolsRule, established in 2011, come from Marin businesses, community organizations and individuals. Last year’s distribution was $784,784.

“This year went very, very well, thanks to our corporate sponsors and many individuals,” said Ken Lippi, SchoolsRule coordinator and deputy superintendent for the Marin County Office of Education.

“Right before COVID, SchoolsRule had distributed over a million dollars,” Lippi said. “We’re not there yet. We are working to get back there.

More than half of the $830,074 will be distributed from the equal share per student fund that was created at the start of SchoolsRule to level the playing field for all students. The rest is distributed from a special equity fund created in 2022 by former schools superintendent Mary Jane Burke to provide additional money to school districts with greater needs.

SchoolsRule’s annual disbursement is the largest contribution for the majority of district foundations, said Melinda MacKaben, SchoolsRule operations manager. She said the funds represent more than 60 percent of the San Rafael Schools Foundation’s operating budget and 50 percent of Novato’s.

“This extraordinary gift from our SchoolsRule donors not only supports critical arts enrichment and student mental health support programs, but allows us to dream bigger for our students,” said Michelene Moayedi, executive director of the foundation San Rafael.

“Thanks to this generosity, we can now expand our Teacher Mini-Grants program, bringing resources directly into classrooms to enhance learning experiences,” Moayedi said.

Since its inception, SchoolsRule has distributed more than $7.5 million.
