Tourists in Rome now have a gateway to visit the Trevi Fountain, but can’t toss coins

Tourists in Rome will not be allowed to throw coins over their shoulders into the Trevi Fountain, in line with tradition, although a raised walkway will now give limited access to the monument during maintenance work.

ROME (AP) — Tourists in Rome will not be allowed to throw coins over their shoulders into the Trevi Fountain, in keeping with tradition, although an elevated walkway will now give limited access to the monument during maintenance work.

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri inaugurated the steel walkway on Saturday, saying it will give tourists a close-up view of the fountain and calling it a “unique experience” that will not be marred by overcrowding.

The walkway over the fountain basin will accommodate approximately 130 people at a time.

But tourists will not be allowed to throw coins there, because the fountain is currently emptied, and if they do, they risk a fine of 50 euros, the mayor warned.

City lore has it that throwing a coin into the baroque fountain will guarantee a return trip to Rome.

Gualtieri said a small swimming pool was installed next to the footbridge to collect coins, which are donated to the charity Caritas to finance meals for people in need.

The footbridge will remain in place until the maintenance work is completed, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Rome city officials are make a plan to block off the area around the fountain. Under the plan, visitors will have to book online and pay 2 euros ($2.20). Once inside, they will have 30 minutes to enjoy the fountain.
