John Thune becomes Senate leader, sparking MAGA backlash

Senator John Thune won enough votes to become the next Senate leader, sparking negative reactions from some supporters of the president-elect Donald Trump.

Thune, a South Dakotan Republicanreceived most votes from Senate Republicans to become the next leader after the GOP reclaimed a majority of Senate seats in this year’s elections. Thune was seen as a more traditional conservative choice, compared to Texas Sen. John Cornyn and Florida Sen. Rick ScottTHE favorite of many MAGA experts.

“I am extremely honored to have earned the support of my colleagues to lead the Senate in the 119th Congressand I am beyond proud of the work we have done to secure our majority and the White House,” Thune said. wrote in a statement. “This Republican team is united behind President Trump’s agenda and our work today.”

However, his victory sparked backlash from some MAGA experts, who believe he was not sufficiently loyal to the president-elect.

Thune has not shied away from criticizing Trump, calling his actions on January 6, 2021, “inexcusable,” despite voting for his acquittal.

“The Senate just screwed us over and gave us Thune as majority leader. He *could* be worse than Mitch McConnell. So disgusted,” wrote conservative commentator Joey Mannarino in a post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Rick Scott missed the 2nd round of voting by 2 votes against Cornyn (.) MAGA is pissed (.) We don’t want Thune or Cornyn!!” wrote commentator Rogan O’Handley.

“We need to know which senators voted for Thune and Cornyn. The American people wanted Rick Scott in office and we made that clear on November 5. This was an extremely important vote and the senators who voted against Scott should be ousted,” wrote Savanah Hernandez, a reporter for Turning point United States.

Conservative activist Charlie Kirk wrote that Thune has a “short window to show us that he will support President Trump, fill his Cabinet, confirm his judges, and enact his agenda.”

“If he does, we will support him. If he doesn’t, we will work to have him fired,” he wrote.

Other Republicanshowever, welcomed Thune’s victory.

“I was fortunate to have started my career on Hill working for @SenJohnThune and am thrilled to see him become Senate Majority Leader. Senator Thune was an incredible boss, a kind and honest man, and I have never been more proud to be part of Team Thune Congratulations, Mr. Leader,” wrote Republican strategist Erin Perrine.

“Thune winning Scott is yet another example of people in Washington not caring what Twitter pundits think or do,” wrote Meghan McCain.

“John Thune was the best option for Senate Majority Leader. The position requires a particular set of skills, and they’re not ones that have been talked about much over the past week. I’m glad that he has been chosen. He will be good in this role,” wrote the. National review Charles C. W. Cooke.
