Randy Smith: SEC race is a toss-up

Randy Smith

For months, we’ve been hearing about the presidential election as a draw. Well, we can also say the same thing about the SEC football race. The league’s last undefeated team, Texas A&M was soundly beaten by South Carolina on Saturday night, leaving a total of five teams in the league with just one loss. Georgia, A&M, Tennessee, Texas and LSU all have one loss, while four others have just two. Since we only have four weeks left in the regular season, it’s easy to see how this is still a toss-up.

When the SEC expanded to 16 teams featuring Texas and Oklahoma, it was decided to eliminate divisional play and the championship game would be played between the top two teams in the league standings. It would be impossible to predict how this will happen because there are so many teams still alive. The good news is that these teams with only one loss will face each other in the coming weeks, eliminating most of these five teams. For example, Tennessee still has to play Georgia, Texas A&M still has to play Texas, LSU doesn’t have a one-loss team on its schedule, but they have four tough conference games left, including the top seed. SEC poster this week against Alabama.

If I were a betting man, which I’m not, I’d say the winner of the Tennessee-Georgia game would face the winner of the Texas-Texas A&M contest in the SEC championship game in Atlanta. But… there’s plenty of football left and any of the other teams I mentioned could sneak in. The overall balance of the SEC this fall is incredible. Who would have thought South Carolina would dismantle Texas A&M like they did on Saturday? Plus, who would have thought Vanderbilt would be nationally ranked and come away with wins over Alabama and Auburn?

As for Tennessee, no one is happy with how they played, but they should be very happy with their wins. Maybe…the Vols just haven’t reached their peak yet and their best football is ahead of them. This is a special team and this could be a really special season. However, as we can easily see, a few other teams are also planning a special season. Time will tell.
