Murderer inspired by TV crime shows gets sentence suspended for brutal murder and dismemberment of woman

When Cory Martin wanted to learn how to cover up a grisly crime and get rid of a murder victim’s dismembered body, he turned to television and watched “The First 48” and “Dexter” for clues, according to federal prosecutors.

“In preparation for the murder, the defendant instructed Witness-1 to watch the television show Dexter. In Dexter, a serial killer kills and dismembers his victims and conceals forensic evidence by covering his ‘death chamber’ from floor to ceiling with plastic,” prosecutors said.

Martin will be sentenced in Brooklyn federal court for killing a sex worker, Brandy Odom, as part of a life insurance fraud and dismembering her body for later disposal.

His sentencing, originally scheduled for Thursday, was later postponed until November 6.

He faces a mandatory life sentence.

“It is appropriate that Martin faces a mandatory sentence of spending the rest of his life in prison for this horrific, cold-blooded crime that was motivated by greed and executed after extensive planning,” United States Attorney Breon Peace said in a statement following Martin’s conviction. ” he said. “Martin viewed the victim as a moneymaker, kidnapping her for commercial sex, then killing her with his bare hands before disposing of her severed body parts like trash so he could profit from her death.”

Odom’s mother is expected to speak in court before sentencing.

Odom’s dismembered body was found in a Canarsie park in 2018, according to authorities. The 26-year-old man’s head and naked torso were found among leaves and branches. His arms and legs were found nearby, authorities said.

He was not arrested until November 2020.

Martin, 36, was convicted in March of murder-for-hire and conspiracy to commit murder-for-hire that resulted in Odom’s death, as well as conspiracy to commit wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and use of a false identity.

“While living with the defendant, Odom acted as her pimp and controlled every aspect of her life, using the income from commercial sex work to pay her bills and fund her lifestyle. The defendant then conspired to further profit from Odom. Prosecutors said “Killed him to get life insurance on his behalf and collect the proceeds,” he said.

Police said Anderson read numerous articles about the murder in the months after the shooting; one of which reads: “The search area has expanded after a dismembered body was found in Brooklyn’s Canarsie Park.”

Adelle Anderson, 32, who was arrested as part of the crime, also previously pleaded guilty to murder-for-hire, identity theft and wire fraud. He has not yet been sentenced, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.
