Americans are preparing their favorite sides for Thanksgiving – NBC New York

On Thanksgiving, one side dish clearly reigns supreme in American hearts and on plates.

Campbell’s conducted a nationwide survey Side Condition Surveysurveying 5,000 American adults about their favorite holiday side dishes and recipe trends. While 45 states showed a clear preference for a beloved dish, five states chose a different culinary path.

The overwhelming favorite was stuffing/dressing, winning the majority vote. During this time, mashed potatoes have captured the hearts of residents of California, Utah, Wyoming, Iowa and West Virginia.

Stuffing/dressing fell from No. 2 in 2023, becoming America’s favorite Thanksgiving side dish in 2024, while mashed potatoes, on the other hand, fell from the top spot .

The side Americans chose for third place was sweet potatoes, an improvement from fourth place in 2023, while green bean casserole also moved up one spot this year to claim fourth place. Macaroni and cheese earned fifth place, down from third place in 2023.

For the third year in a row, Americans say side dishes are the star of the Thanksgiving table.

The White House Historical Association says the National Turkey Federation and the National Egg Board began sending turkeys to U.S. presidents in 1947.

In fact, 56% voted to prefer side dishes to turkey, while 60% say they even prefer cooking the sides over the main bird. On the contrary, only 38% say they would be happy to fill their plate with only side dishes.

To take America’s favorite side dishes a step further, Campbell’s has unveiled a line of limited-edition candles so you can truly enjoy the aromas of your favorite holiday bites.

In partnership with CAMP, the lines created “Flavours of the Sides Season,” with side flavors covering Apple, Fennel and Herb Stuffing, Bagel Seasoned Mashed Potatoes, green beans and jalapeño cheddar mac and cheese.

As we prepare for another festive Thanksgiving, it’s clear that side dishes are the unsung heroes of our holiday celebrations. Whether you’re team stuffing or a mashed potato lover, one thing is certain: the delicious debate will continue to flavor our gatherings for years to come.
