“These mixtures are not regulated or tested, which means they may contain toxic substances.

“We have seen cases where such products have caused liver cirrhosis, kidney failure and other long-term health complications,” NAFDAC said.

NAFDAC noted that products from this facility did not have a registered NAFDAC number, raising alarms about the safety of other herbal products in circulation without formal oversight.

Herbalist claims products are authentic

The alleged herbalist at the center of the operation defended his products, saying they came from Ogun State and had been used for over six months with no reported damage.

“People come from all over to buy my medicine. It works and no one has complained of side effects,” he insisted.

Yet upon further interrogation, he admitted to acquiring fake NAFDAC tags from the Onitsha markets, although he denied applying the numbers himself.

NAFDAC has taken custody of all products seized from the site and said the suspects will be prosecuted once the investigation is complete.
