Houston Fire Department appoints first Black woman as fire marshal

HOUSTONHouston Fire Department made history by appointing Deputy Chief Marion Spann as fire marshal, making her the first Black woman to hold such a critical position.

Mayor John Whitmire celebrated his new position, saying it coincides with his commitment to representation.

“The appointment of Chief Spann as the City of Houston’s first Black female Fire Marshal demonstrates my commitment to diversity and sends a strong message to all Houstonians that we recognize leadership and experience, certainly under my administration,” he said in a press release.

As fire marshal, Spann will lead the arson bureau and the life safety bureau. His responsibilities will include fire investigations, prevention efforts, inspections and code enforcement.

“When Mayor John Whitmire appointed me fire chief, he told me to make sure we had the right people in the right place to protect citizens and take care of our firefighters,” the fire chief said . Thomas Munoz added. Chef Spann has the experience and qualifications to get the job done. Her time as inspector, her leadership and the development of her team will serve this city well.

As fire marshal, HFD says Spann will lead the arson bureau and the life safety bureau. His responsibilities will include fire investigations, prevention efforts, inspections and code enforcement.

This isn’t the first time Spann has made history! She broke barriers in 2000 by becoming the first black woman to hold the position of operating engineer.

Over the years, HFD said Spann held several key positions, including chief of inspection, where she enforced fire prevention laws and regulations. She also holds certification as a Master Fire Inspector, bringing extensive expertise to her new role as Fire Marshal.
