Police officer stops car then escorts couple to hospital after learning the woman was in labor

UTICA, Mich. (WXYZ) — A police officer went above and beyond after stopping a young couple for making an illegal turn when she discovered the woman was in labor.

Austin Sadowski wasn’t shocked when he was arrested on Oct. 17, but he still couldn’t believe it was happening, especially because his fiancée Mary Weertz was in the passenger seat giving birth.

“I wasn’t, I didn’t want to stop. I just needed it because I could see how much pain she was in and how scared she was. I was also scared too. So I was like, I just have to make it happen,” Sadowski said.

Officer Liz Demuynck saw Sadowski making an illegal turn at the intersection and was quick to act.

“So I’m like, ‘Oh my God, we’re going to get arrested.’ Of course we’re going to be arrested now,” Weertz said.

Instead of writing a ticket, Demuynck took action and escorted the couple to the hospital.

The officer is a mother of two herself and guided them to the correct entrance while helping calm Weertz.

“I’m glad it was her because she was so understanding,” Sadowski said.

Eventually, the family arrived at Corewell Health Beaumont just in time.

“Once the monitors were plugged in, not with every contraction, but more than they wanted, his heart rate was dropping really low. So they were nervous about that,” Weertz said.

Baby Henry was born healthy and happy at 11pm with a little drama but lots of love.

“It’s a dream. It’s, it’s great. I love every minute of it. Um, yeah, I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” Sadowiski said.

Demuynck takes the time to check on the family and showers Henry with toys.

“They say they will always keep it with them, but I will keep it with me for my entire career,” she said.

The couple would like to have more children after they get married next year and say they know who to call if they have any problems.
