Colorado man banned from Yellowstone National Park after trespassing in protected area

According to information provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Wyoming, Joseph Aita, 62, of Colorado Springs, left the trail in a hot springs area of ​​the national park and entered a protected area at Canary Spring in Mammoth Hot Springs.

Authorities said he, along with co-defendant Celia Aita and two children, entered the protected area located in the northern zone of the park.

At his Oct. 31 sentencing, authorities said he pleaded guilty to destruction of a mineral resource and was sentenced to five years of probation, with no entry into Yellowstone National Park during that time. He was also fined $3,000.

He was also sentenced to seven days in jail and ordered to pay $60 in mandatory court fees and costs.

Earlier this year, actor Pierce Brosnan also found himself in a sticky situation for leaving a path leading to a dangerous area. The Malibu, Calif., resident pleaded guilty to “traveling on foot in a spa area” and was fined $1,540. Of that amount, $500 was the fine and $1,000 was for the Yellowstone Forever Geological Fund. The remaining balance was intended for administrative costs.
