The Colorado Department of Revenue has released state sports betting figures for September, revealing $562.9 million in wagering, an increase of more than 9.7% year-over-year.

September sports betting also saw a 51.1% month-over-month increase thanks to the return of the NFL. Meanwhile, gross gaming revenue (GRP) was over $55 million, generating over $4 million in taxes.

The Colorado Department of Revenue does not break down its revenue by operators like other U.S. states, but instead provides an overview of betting numbers on popular sports.

Football (professional) $173.1 million 10 million dollars
Baseball $68.9 million $4.1 million
Football (NCAA) $42.3 million $1.1 million

Basketball $33.0 million $1.1 million
Soccer $27.4 million $2.3 million
Table tennis $17.8 million $1.5 million
MMA $3.9 million $1.1 million
Golf $1.5 million -$14,987
Ice hockey $1.1 million $166,165

The impact of the NFL

The NFL is the most popular betting sport in the United States, and there were four NFL weekends in September. This helped bring in over $173.1 million for the NFL, which accounted for over 30% of betting in September. This also marked a significant increase in sports betting on the sport compared to September 2023, where sportsbooks processed over $157.4 million.

The state collected more than $10 million in NFL revenue from such sports betting, which accounted for nearly 18 percent of state revenue. This total revenue only represents a GNP of 5.8% for sports betting. Other sports achieved much higher market shares in September, such as football, with an 8.7% share.

The NFL recently improved its betting integrity measures, introducing suspicious betting activity investigators at every NFL stadium during the 2024 season.

Other popular betting sports in September

After the NFL, baseball is the second largest contributor to Colorado Sports Betting manage, adding more than $68.9 million. However, this is a steep 33.1% decline from August, when baseball betting reached $103.2 million. September marked the end of the MLB season, just before the start of the playoffs.

While college football kicked off in August, the season was in full swing in September, resulting in NCAA college football betting bringing in more than $42.3 million.

Some other sportsbooks remained consistent with August, with table tennis and basketball barely changing from month to month.

Retail sports betting numbers decline year over year

While Colorado saw significant increases in overall sports betting year over year, it was a different story for retail sports betting. In September, retail sportsbooks processed $4.84 million, a decrease of almost 0.5% from last September.

Although this difference is almost negligible, it paints a very different picture of the growth generated by online sports betting. Colorado’s land-based gaming sites appear increasingly focused on online sports betting, with two local Native American tribes continuing to battle to launch online betting platforms. The online account reached over $558.07 million in September.
