THE Detroit Lions have one of the biggest matchups of the season on the road at Week 9 of the 2024 NFL season.

THE Lions (6-1) moves to play the Green Bay Packers (6-2) today in a battle of two best teams in the NFC for eight weeks. To be the early leaders, the Lions reeled off five straight wins to get off to the franchise’s best start since 1956, including smoking the lowly Tennessee Titans, 52-14, last week.

The biggest question at Lambeau Field, besides the rainy forecast, is the availability of Packers quarterback Jordan Lovewho is listed as questionable after suffering a groin strain last week against the Jaguars.

Green Bay is on a four-game winning streak and can take the conference lead with a win, which would propel the Lions into second place in the NFC North. Only division winners are guaranteed a home playoff game. The Packers have won two straight games thanks to last-second game-winning field goals from Brandon McManus.

The Lions have won two straight games in Lambeau and are 4-2 against the Packers under coach Dan Campbell. Last year, Detroit won the first game on the road 34-20, but the Packers spoiled Thanksgiving, 29-22. The Lions and Packers play again Thursday night in Week 14 at Ford Field.

Lions vs. Packers Pregame Notes

The winner will determine the NFC North leader at midseason in a four-way race that is expected to go down to the final weeks. The Lions are 1-0 in the division this season with a 31-29 road win over the Minnesota Vikings two weeks ago; the Packers lost to Minnesota by the same margin in Week 4.

The Lions were firing on all cylinders on offense over the past monthscoring 40 points in three of the last four matches and even resting starters in some fourth quarters. Last week, the Lions feasted on short fields thanks to four defensive turnovers and incredible special teams returns, but still converted all five red zone opportunities thanks to the running game.

The Packers defense leads the NFL with 19 forced turnovers and nine fumbles recovered. And they have history against the Lions’ offense, having shut down Detroit’s offense with three fumble recoveries on Thanksgiving last year.

If Love is available, Green Bay’s offense can make big plays through the air with a group of talented receivers led by former Michigan State star Jayden Reed and a powerful downhill running game with Josh Jacobs. If Malik Willis is under centerexpect the Packers to lean more on the running game with Jacobs, although Willis showed the ability to rip up some passes last week in the second half against Jacksonville.

Lions vs. Packers predictions, picks

Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press: This game could go a long way in determining home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. The Lions played largely mistake-free football on offense, but Goff was dangerously close to losing three fumbles in recent weeks. In sloppy conditions and facing an aggressive Packers defense, I’m not sure he’ll have as much luck on Sunday. I think the Lions are the better team, but on the road and in the elements, I pick Green Bay. The selection: Packers 24, Lions 21.

Lions vs. Packers Betting Odds

  • More/less: 48 points.

Lions vs. Packers injury report

Lions injuries: The hits against the Lions’ front seven continue. Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez (ankle) is out after leaving the Titans game in the first quarter, defensive end Josh Paschal (illness) will miss his second consecutive game, and Rookie defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo (ankle) is out. The Lions are already without Aidan Hutchinson, Marcus Davenport, Brodric Martin and Derrick Barnes up front. Receiver Jameson Williams is out for the second of a two-game suspension.

Packer injuries: Green Bay’s biggest question, obviously, is who will play quarterback. Love performed Thursday and Friday, but is listed as questionable. Willis, the replacement, showed this season that he was capableleading the Packers to three wins this season in relief. Willis, in his third season with Liberty after being a third-round pick of the Titans, was acquired in August for a seventh-round pick.
