    Greenville County deputies fatally shoot Greer man after standoff

    The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating a fatal shooting involving Greenville County sheriff’s deputies.

    A Greer man, whose identity has not been released, was shot and killed by SWAT team deputies Monday evening after a three-hour standoff, according to GCSO Lt. Ryan Flood.

    Flood said Greenville County Communications received a report of a shooting at 3212 North Highway 101 around 9:30 p.m. The caller said a man shot another person who lived in the home. The victim, whom police also did not identify, escaped unharmed.

    The GCSO SWAT team arrived and attempted to negotiate with the man inside the residence, according to Flood. Around 12:30 a.m., police shot the man. Flood would not say what led to the shooting.

    “The suspect barricaded himself in the house and the SWAT team arrived on scene and established a perimeter. We made several attempts to negotiate with the suspect, and when those attempts failed, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” Sheriff Hobart Lewis said via video.

    The two deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave. None were injured.

    Flood said the GCSO would not immediately release additional information about the shooting, but would release a community briefing video on the critical incident at 8 a.m. Dec. 20 via the GCSO YouTube page.

    This shooting is the fifth this year involving GCSO deputies. There were three last year.
