Former Morgan County pastor convicted of sodomy

MORGAN COUNTY, Alabama (FOR WHAT) — A former pastor was convicted of sodomy after days of testimony.

Danny Duane Pitts was found guilty of second-degree sodomy Thursday after a trial in Morgan County, according to court officials.

Pitts was initially charged with two counts of sodomy in 2021, and his trial began Monday.

Trial testimony began Tuesday with former Hartselle police investigator Amy Crouch.

Crouch said the accuser, then a teenager, disclosed details of several illegal sexual relationships between him and his pastor, Danny Pitts.

At that time, Crouch said cases of a sexual nature had to be written into a report and submitted to the district attorney’s office to decide whether they would go to a grand jury. She testified that her investigation took nearly a year, but she then turned it over to prosecutors.

The victim in that case also tearfully testified that Pitts took advantage of him from the start of the counseling sessions. The victim said he initially kept it to himself, but then confided in his family, who offered support if he wanted to press charges.

Pitts will be sentenced on December 11. He is also awaiting trial in Tennessee on similar charges.
