The results of the 2024 presidential election are in, with Donald Trump preparing to return to the White House to serve his second term. But the result has American bettors asking an important question: What does Trump’s presidency mean for the future of legal gambling, particularly sports betting?

The legality of sports betting has been a matter for individual states since the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, during Trump’s previous term. After Missouri voters approved Amendment 2 in this week’s election, 39 states have now taken action to legalize sports bettingwhile Utah and Hawaii remain the only two states without any legal gambling.

Currently, regulatory clarity is minimal in the industry. Although federal legislation has been introduced, it has not moved forward. Congress has not passed restrictions on advertising or specific types of betting, for example.

“You’re going to have corruption.”

On the eve of Election Day, Trump appeared on the SiriusXM podcast “Let’s Go!” ” hosted by legendary football coach Bill Belichick and Emmy Award-winning journalist Jim Gray. The interview featured a wide-ranging discussion on the state of sports in America, including how to combat corruption in sports betting.

“Well, there will be corruption, and the only question is, will it be massive corruption or, you know, regular, standard corruption? Trump commented, as reported NBC Sports.

“It’s very interesting that they went from one extreme to the other. They kept Pete Rose out of the Hall of Fame for, I mean, a ridiculous – in my opinion – ridiculous situation. It was – I mean, I grew up watching this guy. He was great. But no, I think you will – you will have corruption. When you play, you have a lot.

Rose, known as the MLB hit king, was banned from baseball for life in 1989 after betting on baseball games while playing for and managing the Reds. Such incidents involving athletes betting on sports it still continues today. For example, former NBA player Jontay Porter recently admitted his role in a Paris scandal. He was banned from the league for life and will be sentenced in December.

Recent developments in sports betting legislation

In September, two members of Congress proposed the SAFE Bet Act. Democratic Rep. Paul Tonko, who was re-elected Tuesday to a U.S. House of Representatives seat representing New York, and Richard Blumenthal, who was up for re-election this year, proposed measures to limit advertising on sports betting during adults-only hours, to limit sports betting deposits to five times per hour. day, ban college players’ accessories nationwide, and more.

Charlie Baker, president of the NCAA called on all states to ban betting on college players earlier this year to protect athletes from harassment and because it threatens the integrity of competition. Maryland, Ohio, Louisiana, and Vermont are the only states that prohibit prop betting. Other states, like Connecticut, have restrictions in place, but such betting is not completely banned.
