Harrisburg residents go to the polls to choose a president: “Our children deserve a role model”

Voters waiting in line at Camp Curtin Academy in Harrisburg on Tuesday were treated to R&B music from a nearby DJ stationed under a white tent before casting their ballots.

Lines were short and people could be in and out in less than 30 minutes.

As of 10:23 a.m., nearly 230 residents had stopped by Camp Curtin Academy to vote, a poll official told PennLive.

Former president of the Harrisburg school board and a resident of the city for nearly 30 years, Roy Christ61, told PennLive he was voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and that voting was “our sacred responsibility.”

“I can’t vote for a liar,” Christ said. “Our children deserve a role model. The vote is not about us, but about the legacy we leave behind. So, are we going to stand by and watch everything we believe in disappear? Or are we going to change it?

Christ told PennLive he was voting for dignity, respect and change.

“We have a gentleman (President Joe Biden) who gave up his golden years with his grandchildren to save our country and he deserves dignity. And if he chooses this person to be the leader of his legacy, then we must respect that.

A 58-year-old Harrisburg resident of 10 years said he felt like “our country was going in the wrong direction” and said he voted for former Republican President Donald Trump. He asked to remain anonymous.

“I fear that the extremes that I do not align with will take over the country and take us further down a path that we will not be able to return to,” he said.

“I want to get back to the point where the whole country generally agrees on things, but we work together to solve problems and find fair common ground,” he said.

Harrisburg resident Anna Hooper, 75, said she is voting for Harris because she wants the country to move in a better direction.

“My motivation is my ancestors because they died so we could vote,” Hooper said. “It’s terrible, the country is collapsing and will continue to collapse if a certain person (Trump) is elected.”

Hooper also raised concerns about “Project 2025,” a document detailing Republican priorities, telling PennLive that she believes it is a radical shift in the wrong direction for Black Americans.

Brenna Mills, 77, said she was voting for Harris because she “believes she can do good for this country.” Its important issues include access to Social Security and Medicare.

“We need to bring the country together instead of tearing it apart,” she said.
