‘Renegade’ UK could be spared Donald Trump’s tariffs, US governor says | US News

The UK could be spared the impact of Donald Trump’s proposed tariff increases on foreign imports, a US governor has told Sky News.

The day after the victory of the Republican candidate decisive election victory against Kamala Harris this week, attention turns to what the former president will do when he returns to the White House.

Mr. Trump said he wants to raise tariffs – taxes on imported goods – on goods from around the world by 10%, and raise them to 60% on goods from around the world. Chinaas part of his plan to protect American industries.

But foreign capitals fear what it could do to their savings. Goldman Sachs has lowered its forecast for UK economic growth for next year from 1.6% to 1.4%, while EU officials expect a reduction in exports to the United States of €150 billion (£125 billion).

However, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy – a Democrat – believes Mr Trump could consider not including the UK in the tariff plans.

Speaking on Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillipsthe governor said he could not speak for the president-elect but had a “good relationship” with him.

His hunch is that Mr. Trump will not impose tariffs on products from allies like the United Kingdom. “But if I’m in China, I’m wearing my seat belt right now,” he said.

Mr Murphy said Mr Trump could look favorably on the UK after it leaves the European Union.

The president-elect is considering offering the United Kingdom a special deal that would exempt British exports from billions of pounds of tariffs, according to The Telegraph.

“Donald Trump (has) some sympathy for the renegade who has courage,” Mr. Murphy continued. “I think there’s a little bit. I think it’s a card that can be played. We’ll see.”

He was asked if British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer can establish a relationship with the new president, Mr. Murphy said: “I have managed to find common ground with President Trump, and I am a proud progressive, even though I am a cold-blooded capitalist, which is probably the case. of me that President Trump resonates with.”

Will Brexit help the UK in trade talks with Trump?

Could Brexit help Sir Keir Starmer and the British government in their trade negotiations with President Trump – who calls himself a “tariff man” – and the United States?

The suggestion – ironic, given the Prime Minister’s hostility to Brexit and his commitment to a “reset” with the EU – was made by a Trump ally and confidant, although he is a leading Democrat.

The claim comes from Phil Murphy, governor of New Jersey, in an interview for Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips on Sky News.

Murphy says he has a good relationship with Trump, who has a lavish mansion he calls the Summer White House, a 500-acre estate and a golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, just 45 minutes away of Trump Tower in New York.

He says his “hunch” is that Trump sympathizes with the UK for having the courage to withdraw from the EU, “this big bureaucratic mass” and “it’s a card that can be played” by the Kingdom -United in commercial negotiations.

Really? As Trevor politely pointed out, it could benefit the UK if the Prime Minister was Nigel Farage rather than Sir Keir.

Mr Farage, however, speaking at a Reform UK regional conference in Exeter, described Trump as a “pro-British US president” who would offer the UK “potentially huge opportunities”.

But there is a problem, according to the British reform leader. Trump’s favors will only come, he asserts, “if we manage to overcome the difficulties caused by the entire cabinet which has been rude towards him”.
