Bub Carrington produces early in Rookie campaign

In an opening week where few rookies have been exceptionally good, 14th overall pick and Washington Wizards rookie Bub Carrington stood out with his pull-up shooting and passing prowess. In four games, the 6-foot-4 guard averaged 10.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists on 62.2 percent true shooting in just 26.3 minutes per game.

Carrington did his damage in the NBA much like he did in college – with his jump shot. He shot an absurd 50.9% on 116 two-man shots in his lone season in Pittsburgh, and is 3-of-6 on those shots with the Wizards early. However, he only shot 32% from three in college, both catch-and-shoot and pull-up, but is 6-of-12 (50.0%) so far.

This combination of quality two- and three-man shooting has led to excellent production in the pick-and-roll. He scored 15 points on 9 possessions as a pick-and-roll ball handler, good for 1.67 points per possession, which would have put him first in the NBA if he had reached the minimum of 10 possessions required to be ranked. Of course, this only shows how small the sample size has been so far.

His main offensive problems have also remained the same: managing contacts during training and arrivals. He only made 5 shots at the rim and made only 2 (40.0%). His rebounding numbers also declined while his steal and block numbers remained the same. Being more inviting to physicality and managing that physicality better would be very helpful for Carrington.
