CNN bans Ryan Girdusky. Finally, a stand for civility

play

Ryan Girdusky made a shockingly inappropriate comment live on CNN Monday night, and was fired from the network for it — bounced during a commercial break, no less.

GOOD.

During “CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip,” the panelists engaged in freewheeling discussion, talking about Donald Trump’s hate rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Mehdi Hasan, the former MSNBC host, said he was used to people calling him an anti-Semite because of his support for the Palestinians.

Girdusky, a Trump supporter, said: “I hope your beeper doesn’t go off. »

Oh, come on.

This was a reference to the Israeli military operation that detonated pagers carried by Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, killing at least 37 people and injuring nearly 3,000, according to CNN.

What did Ryan Girdusky say on CNN?

In other words, Girdusky called Hasan a terrorist.

“Did you just say I should die?” » said Hasan, indignant. “Did you just say I should be killed on CNN?

The panel burst and Phillip tried to regain control. “It’s completely out of your pocket,” she told Girdusky. “You know that.” Girdusky apologized, but neither Hasan nor the other panelists understood it.

After a break, a somber Phillip returned, facing the camera, and apologized to viewers. She said Girdusky is no longer on the panel. “There was a line that was crossed and it’s not acceptable to me,” she said. “This is not acceptable to us on this network.”

Girdusky responded with more vitriol

CNN later released a statement saying, “There is no place for racism or intolerance at CNN or on our airwaves. » He also said, “Ryan Girdusky will not be welcome in our network. »

Again, good.

So how did Girdusky react? Pretty much as you think. That is to say, instead of apologizing, he increased his hatred and attacks.

“You can stay on CNN if you falsely call all Republicans Nazis and have received money from Qatar-funded media,” he said in an article on X (Where Else? ). “Apparently you can’t go on CNN if you make a joke. I’m glad America can see what CNN stands for.

Me too. Because, in this case, that meant doing the right thing — refusing to let a partisan hack try to intimidate another guest with racist threats just to score points with Trump’s base. However, inadvertently, Girdusky also showed American what he stands for.

Opposing opinions matter, on TV news and everywhere else. But while civility is reduced to a core due to increasingly racist and bigoted behavior, from Trump on down, there must be consequences for actions. Otherwise, bullies will do as they please. If calling someone a terrorist doesn’t raise alarms, what will?

Girdusky’s comments were shocking, but not surprising

That said, if you invite someone like Girdusky onto your airwaves, isn’t it just a matter of time before something like this happens? If you put your hand in a wolverine cage, there is a good chance you will be bitten. This doesn’t make the bite less painful, but it does make it less surprising.

This is similar to the argument against election deniers repeatedly coming forward to falsely claim that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump. I think it’s important to have them officially listed, less so to continue to invite them to defend the same lies.

But what did Girdusky say? Come on. Like Phillip said, he crossed a line.

“We want a discussion,” she said on air. “We want people who disagree to talk to each other. But when you cross the line into a complete lack of civility, that’s not going to happen here on this show.

Or any other, hopefully.
