Man finds class ring he lost in ocean 47 years ago

A diver recently found a man with his college ring, which he lost in the ocean 47 years ago!

Morgan Perigo became estranged from his class of 1965 at McMaster University in Canada in 1977, while vacationing with his family in Barbados, according to CNN.

When a large wave threatened to separate Perigo from his son, he clung tightly to the boy but not so much to his ring, which slipped into the water.

Fast forward more than four decades later and Perigo has diver Alex Davis to thank for discovering the true hidden gem.

Davis told CNN that he used a metal detector to search the ocean floor after his interest in finding lost items was upended by Hurricane Beryl, which rode on the island in summer.

“So in areas where it was like a nice sandy beach, you can suddenly see all these exposed rocks,” Davis told the outlet. “With that kind of mind, I thought, Okay, are there any areas now that I want to go where it looks like a lot of sand has been removed?”

He said he was searching in an area containing coins from the 1970s and 1980s when his metal detector started beeping indicating he had found gold.

Under layers of dead coral, sand and rocks, the diver unearthed a ring with a dark red stone, virtually intact.

Engraved with the words “McMaster University 1965” and the initials “FMP,” Davis soon embarked on another discovery: finding the owner.

A simple inquiry to the University of Hamilton in Ontario sparked a larger search.

Laura Escalante, the school’s alumni manager, was then able to match a name with the initials, according to a press release from the school.

All of this finally gave Davis a satisfactory answer.

The freediver then contacted Perigo, who told him how he had lost the ring and that his birthday was approaching.

“It was like, ‘Oh my God, this story just can’t get any better,'” Davis told CNN. “Not only did we find him after 47 years at the bottom of the sea, but also, I found him, you know, a week before his birthday.”

Davis shipped the ring to Perigo, who received the keepsake again, just in time for her big day.

“What a wonderful, unexpected 83rd birthday gift,” Perigo said, according to his alma mater.
