Scotland-Portugal Nations League: Tommy Conway’s chance to shine?

When it became clear he would not be signing a new contract at Bristol City, it was Middlesbrough who pounced.

And while he has made a good impression on Teesside, doubts remain over whether or not he is a striker.

BBC Radio Tees Sport lead commentator Mark Drury warns anyone expecting Conway to end Scotland’s search for a number nine.

“He thinks he is a striker but Carrick has flirted with the idea of turning him into a number 10, someone who would play against the main striker,” Drury said.

“He’s a good finisher, he’s very mobile. He likes to play on the shoulder of the last defender. It’s obvious what he wants: balls behind the central defender or Ben Doak coming down the wing and cutting him ball.

“His finishing is excellent and that bodes well for his long-term future. He’s a smart striker and doesn’t let his defenders rest.”

While Doak is only on loan from Liverpool, his Scotland teammate Conway has a contract on Teesside until 2028 – and Drury is delighted.

“He is very sure of himself and ready to cope. He is a very complete character. We don’t know how high his ceiling is. He needs time but there is a lot of promise there.”

Steve Clarke and all Scotland supporters will be hoping that promise comes true – and can propel the national team to the next World Cup.
