Meta is building an AI search engine to reduce its dependence on Google and Bing

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is building its own artificial intelligence-based search engine to reduce its reliance on answers from Google and Bing, The Information reported Monday.

The company’s search engine will crawl “the web to provide conversational answers about current events to people using its Meta AI chatbot,” according to the report.

Meta’s AI chatbot is integrated with the search and messaging features of its apps, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger. The chatbot currently displays search results from Google and Bing as part of its responses. Quite, Meta’s apps have 3.27 billion users.

Monday’s news follows last week’s announcement that Meta had signed an agreement with Reuters to include the news agency’s content in its responses to the AI.

The deal with Reuters also came after CEO Mark Zuckerberg said he believed his company would enter into “some partnerships” to bolster its AI responses, but that “individual creators or publishers tend to overestimate the value” of their content.

“I guess there will be certain partnerships that will be made when the content is really important and valuable,” Zuckerberg said. The edge.

In the future, Meta’s AI chatbot will cite Reuters articles in its responses and provide links to the media outlet’s content. Reuters will be paid for its reporting, a source told Axios.

Meta stock is up 1% Monday morning at $579.21 per share. The company has seen strong growth in 2024, with Meta shares up 67% year to date. Meta is expected to report its third-quarter results on Wednesday afternoon.
