Xbox update brings back friend requests and revamps console search

The latest Xbox update restores friend requests, improves search, and adds more customization options for profile photos and home screens.

As of this update, you can only be friends with someone if they accept your invitation and vice versa. You can still follow people, but it’s a one-way connection that tells you what content they choose to share with their followers. All current connections will be updated accordingly, meaning you won’t need to make any changes to maintain your current list of friends and followers.

However, if you want to manage your friends and followers, you can press the Xbox button on your controller and select the People tab. Once there, you can view your friends list, accept/delete requests and search for new friends. Along with these changes, the privacy and relationship notification settings have been overhauled.

Friend requests and search features have been updated on Xbox consoles and apps.

The new search feature offers greater precision (according to Microsoft) and can interpret typos, shortcuts, synonyms and even emoji. The search changes have been rolled out to console and the Windows Xbox app.

On console, you now have more freedom to personalize your profile. You can create player images (i.e. your Xbox profile picture) from achievement art or your screenshots. Additionally, you can zoom and crop images when setting your home background.

As for the Windows Xbox app, the home interface has been redesigned, allowing you to return to what you’ve been playing with “jump back in experience” (even from compact mode). The Xbox Accessories app also received a free update, allowing you to calibrate controllers and triggers, map mouse inputs, and more to your Elite or Elite 2 controller.
