Biden will attend the inauguration in 2025. It doesn’t matter who wins.

WASHINGTON – President Joe Biden will attend the inauguration of his successor in January, whether or not the vice president Kamala Harris or former president Donald Trump wins next week’s election, the White House announced Wednesday.

“This president believes in the peaceful transfer of power, and that’s what you’re going to see this president do,” spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Outgoing presidents traditionally attend the inauguration ceremony of their successor on the steps of the Capitol. But Trump broke this tradition in 2021.

After losing a hard-fought race to Biden — a race he still falsely claims to have won — Trump refused to attend Biden’s inauguration. He left the White House hours before Biden was sworn in, boarded a helicopter and immediately left Washington.

Biden recognizes, however, that Americans want to see a peaceful transfer of power, Jean-Pierre said.

“It’s not about him, it’s about the American people,” she said. “He understands the need for a peaceful transfer of power, and that’s what you’re going to see from the president.”

Attending the new president’s inauguration ceremony is part of this transfer of power, Jean-Pierre said, “and he will certainly participate in it.”

Polls show that Harris, the Democratic candidate, and Trump, the Republican, are locked in a close race.

Biden expected to be the Democratic nominee, but he ended his bid for a second term in July and supported Harris amid questions over whether or not he could defeat Trump.

Biden has repeatedly called Trump a threat to democracy, citing his refusal to accept the results of the 2020 election and the attack on the Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters attempting to prevent the certification of these results on January 6, 2021.
