San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Brock Purdy underwent an MRI early last week after suffering a shoulder injury during the team’s Week 11 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Initially, the team believed the injury only required rest, remaining optimistic that he would be available for the critical Week 12 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

However, after Purdy was severely limited during practice, the 49ers ruled him out on Friday. His status for next weekend’s game against the Buffalo Bills remains “up in the air.”

On Sunday morning, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer revealed that Purdy underwent a second MRI after experiencing significant difficulty throwing during Thursday’s practice. He ultimately left practice to seek treatment for his shoulder soreness, canceling his post-practice news conference with reporters and casting serious doubt on his availability this weekend.

“So he hurt his shoulder last week against Seattle, and on Monday they did an MRI on him, which just showed a shoulder strain,” Glazer said. “Tuesday, Wednesday, practice. They thought he was in good rhythm there. And then Thursday they came out and tried to throw. It stuck on him.

“So what no one knows is they did another MRI on him on Thursday, but it didn’t show anything else. So they’re kind of living with the question of when he’s going to be back there -down. They’re just going to try to rehabilitate him, hopefully he’ll come back next week, but they don’t know that at the moment.

Despite the setback, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the 49ers remain optimistic about Purdy’s chances of playing against the Bills. The team does not view this injury as a long-term concern, although they acknowledge some uncertainty.

“The 49ers believe quarterback Brock Purdy should be able to return next Sunday in Buffalo despite his shoulder soreness,” Schefter wrote. “Then again, they also thought he would be able to start today in Green Bay before they couldn’t. Yet, at the moment, there doesn’t seem to be much concern.”
