The election of Elon Musk the bets paid off as soon as Donald Trump was re-elected. But even as the world’s richest man finds himself on the cusp of enormous political power, Musk can’t seem to escape the core of his being: a deeply unlikeable personality.

According to multiple reports, Musk is everywhere you turn at Mar-a-Lago, since the gift shop at almost every meeting and meal with President-elect Trump. This constant presence has also extended to social media, where Musk calls himself “first buddy” and appears in photos with Trump’s grandchildren. All of this, coupled with the tech billionaire’s apparent inability to keep a private opinion, has proven so authoritarian that NBC News reports that Trump insiders are to be fed up with Musk’s relentless efforts to impose what they see as a personal agenda.

Such descriptions don’t really surprise anyone who’s been forced to pay attention to Musk’s antics over the years; the tech billionaire is as known for his wealth as he is for his angry and trolling behavior.

But even if Trump seems to want reward Musk For his enthusiastic support of the 2024 election, early reports of irritation within Trump’s circle – already infamous for infighting and toxicity – do not bode well for Musk’s position. A quote from NBC at least seems to hint at such shaky ground:

“He’s acting like he’s co-president and making sure everyone knows it,” one source said, adding that Musk “certainly takes a lot of credit for the president’s victory.” Bragging about America PAC and X to anyone who will listen.

“He’s trying to make President Trump feel indebted to him. And the president owes no one.

Another source said Policy that “Elon is getting a little big for his britches.”

Time will tell if Trump is tired of seeing a billionaire hang on for too long, especially if that billionaire continues to inject himself into every corner of the next administration. But the president-elect is notoriously a mercurial man — and I’m hard-pressed to think of anyone more deeply irritating —and not funny– than Elon Musk.
