Second half

4:07 remaining: Syracuse 58, Youngstown 62

Davis goes up for the block with a right hand, but chooses to crush it with a left hand on the way down.

The Orange’s free throw difficulties began to show as the game progressed. Currently 10-18 years old at the charity strip.

Lampkin goes straight to Dynes and scores despite the outstretched arms of the 7′3 center.

Fifth-year Penguin Nico Galette with a smooth finish to extend the lead to four.

7:56 remaining: Syracuse 53, Youngstown 53

Starling hits a deep shot, her second three of the game.

Freeman joins the trio, hitting his first of the contest from the top of the key.

Davis, who had a fairly quiet match by his standards, gets to the line thanks to a solid drive. That’s one in two.

11:28 remaining: Syracuse 46, Youngstown 49

After Dynes committed his fourth foul, Starling drove straight to the rim for an uncontested finish.

Jaquan Carlos finds Starling trailing the fastbreak for a three-way transition.

14:26 remaining: Syracuse 41, Youngstown 46

Lampkin collects the loose ball before throwing a low ball to Freeman for the two-handed slam.

On the next play, Lampkin throws his second behind-the-back pass today to Freeman for a finish at the rim.

16:24 remaining: Syracuse 37, Youngstown 42

Freeman finds a sharp Starling to get the first points of the second half for the Orange.

Starling repays Freeman the next time, finding him in the neighborhood. Freeman spins the smaller defender and finishes with an easy finger roll.

Halftime: Syracuse 31, Youngstown 38

After a glacial shooting performance from beyond the arc in the first half, Syracuse trails Youngstown State by seven.

When 7-foot-3 Youngstown center Gabe Dynes went out early with two quick fouls, there was a golden opportunity to attack the basket for SU. While there were times when Eddie Lampkin and others took advantage in the paint, the Orange too often settled for three-point shots that didn’t fall.

Defensively, the Orange also struggled to contain the attack. EJ Farmer, who came into this game shooting 1-19 from the field, has 13 points at halftime. Overall, the Penguins are shooting 50 percent from the field, with the majority of the half played without one of their best players, Dynes.

JJ Starling leads the way for the Orange with seven points, while Lampkin and Chris Bell both have six each.

Currently shooting 7% from deep, SU will need to find a way to get going behind the arc as the game heads into the final 20 minutes of action.

First half

Taylor knocks down a pair down the line.

A heave taken from half court by Starling is overturned after the referee rules he has left the field.

1:07 remaining: Syracuse 29, Youngstown 36

Lampkin with the pass behind the back to Petar Majstorovic for the finish.

The offensive struggles continue for the Orange, multiple looks at the basket and offensive rebounds do not result in a score.

3:51 remaining: Syracuse 27, Youngstown 32

Syracuse imposes a five-second violation upon arrival.

Starling with a flip sweater. He has six points in the competition so far.

7:09 remaining: Syracuse 22, Youngstown 23

JJ Starling with an aggressive grab to the basket for two.

Lampkin knocks down the fifteen-foot jumper on a feed from Jyare Davis. The two have developed a nice synergy when playing together in the front court.

Showing his passing ability, Lampkin threads the needle with a bouncing bass to a sharp Lucas Taylor who slams it.

Lampkin rebounds from his own miss and puts it back in for the and-one. The Colorado transfer made his presence felt without Dynes patrolling the paint on the other end.

11:34 remaining: Syracuse 12, Youngstown 17

Donnie Freeman takes over from Eddie Lampkin and steps up for the mid-range jumper.

Second early foul for 7-foot-3 Gabe Dynes for the Penguins. Look for the Orange to attack the paint now that they are free of a big shot blocker.

Freeman was the first to take advantage of the open space inside, reducing the volume for an easy slam.

Bell then took his turn at the basket, driving to the rim for an and-one finish.

15:31 remaining: Syracuse 5, Youngstown 8

Chris Bell opened the scoring for the Orange with a three after the Penguins scored the first four points.

Youngstown’s EJ Farmer has six of the team’s eight points in the early going. Already over his season an average of 5.5 points per competition.

Pre-match

After the emotional peak of Kiyan Anthony Dayyes, there is a basketball game to play.

Syracuse (2-0) ends its stay at home to start the season against Youngstown State (1-1).

This will be the first ever confrontation between the two teams. The last time Youngstown played an ACC school was an 88-81 loss at Notre Dame on November 13, 2022. Overall, the Penguins’ record against ACC teams is 0-8, which should bode well for an Orange team still looking for a quality team. victory from start to finish this season.

Syracuse is coming off another close game against Colgate where they escaped with a 74-72 victory despite three straight missed free throws to ice the game. The Orange held a double-digit lead early in the second half, but Colgate came roaring back and kept it close down the stretch. A last-second defensive stop kept SU undefeated in the young season.

Eddie Lampkin stuffed the stat sheet with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds to go along with five assists. Chris Bell wasn’t far behind with 14 points, including a personal 7-0 run in the second half.

For Youngstown, their last game was an 81-47 loss to No. 21 Ohio State on the road. Fifth-year guard Nico Galette leads the team with 12 points and nearly six rebounds a night. The Penguins will also have the undisputed size advantage today. Gabe Dynes, a 7-foot-3 sophomore, fills the middle and averages 5 blocks a night.

One thing to watch: conversion at the free throw line

In two matches, the Orange missed 15 free throws, including some crucial ones down the stretch. Those misses kept SU’s opponents closer than perhaps they should have been late in the game. If Syracuse can get to the line and convert at a high rate, it should be a confidence boost heading into its first road game of the season next week against Texas.
