Selena Gomez Reveals Health Diagnosis in Response to Body Shamers: ‘It Makes Me Sick’

Selena Gomez has once again shut down social media body shamers — and she revealed another health issue in the process.

The “Only Murders in the Building” star and founder of Rare Beauty cosmetics slammed speculation about her weight on TikTok, revealing she lives with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. She shared her revelation days after walking the red carpet last week for the premiere of her film “Emilia Pérez” at the French American Film Festival in Hollywood.

At the Oct. 29 event, Emmy nominee “Wizards of Waverly Place” former student posed in a body-hugging black dress. In a since-deleted post, TikTok users allegedly observed Gomez posing with her hands on her stomach, alleging she was hiding her body, according to TMZ. Gomez, who the body shamers previously discussed on social media, responded to the video: “It makes me sick.”

Gomez, 32, responded by revealing that she suffered from SIBO, according to several screenshots shared on social media. “It’s igniting. I don’t care if I don’t look like a sick figure (sic). I don’t have that body. End of story.”

She added: “No, I am NOT a victim. I am just human.”

THE Mayo Clinic says SIBO occurs when the small intestine experiences an “abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population,” particularly of types of bacteria not commonly found in this part of the body. SIBO, also known as blind loop syndrome, typically occurs “when a circumstance – such as surgery or illness – slows the passage of food and waste through the digestive tract.” The former Disney Channel child star revealed in 2017 that she had undergone a kidney transplant due to lupus nephritis, where lupus, an autoimmune disease, causes a person’s kidneys to fail.

Symptoms of SIBO include bloating, abdominal pain, and nausea.

Gomez has long been public about her physical and mental health struggles, including her battle with lupus and her experiences with bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression. In September, Gomez revealed that she I can’t carry a child due to her many health issues and will likely turn to surrogacy or adoption when she decides to start a family.

“It’s something I had to mourn for a while,” she told Vanity Fair in an interview published two months ago.

In February 2023, Gomez also publicly addressed her weight and body issues. She said during a TikTok live that the medications she takes to manage her lupus cause her to retain water. “Not a model. I never will be,” she said at the time before reminding her followers of their own beauty.

“I just want people to know that you are beautiful and wonderful and yes, we have days where maybe we feel like shit, but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself,” she said. Gomez at the time. , adding “my medications are important and I believe they are helping me.”
