Google Play Store down for you? Reported outages

TL;DR

  • Reports of problems with Google Play have increased since late this morning.
  • Some users describe issues with updates, while others are unable to download apps in the first place.
  • Not everyone seems to encounter these errors.

When Android users are looking to discover new apps, or simply want to make sure the ones they have installed are up to date with the latest patches, the vast majority of us turn to the Google Play Store. One Stop Shop is our portal to all kinds of media, from games to books, at least when it works. And unfortunately, today, that doesn’t seem to be the case for some of us.

We’ve noticed signs of issues with Google Play in recent hours. Down detector shows a series of reports beginning around 11 a.m. Eastern Time and continuing until publication time. We find evidence of a similar spike on Google Trends, although its data lags by a few hours.

Reports of issues have also appeared on social media, like this Reddit post from the user Non-Mapping-3163 about error messages from the Play Store, or this recent one from No price-2882 where updates get stuck while downloading.

That said, we tried accessing the Play Store and using it to update apps after hearing these reports, and encountered no issues ourselves. So while it seems clear that there’s something wrong with the Play Store today, it’s not a problem so widespread that it affects everyone – at least not yet.

We’ll keep an eye on any further movement here and update our coverage accordingly.
