Northumbrian Water said work to isolate the leak would be “carried out shortly”.

“Due to the high-risk position of the issue and the planning required to complete the work safely, we anticipate a full repair will be carried out early next week,” the company said.

“We had to close the footbridge on the left side bridge heading north.

“This temporary closure will remain in place until full repairs are undertaken.”

The bridge will remain open to traffic, but Northumbrian Water said those traveling on foot may wish to consider alternative routes.
