The Chiefs’ biggest blind spot is also Patrick Mahomes, and that’s a huge problem

It wasn’t pretty for the Kansas City Chiefs despite a 7-0 record and the last undefeated team in the NFL. Their track record would indicate that they have outperformed the competition, but that is far from the case. Although minor, the two-time defending Super Bowl champions have some holes that have become evident throughout the season.

Kansas City recently took two dramatic steps to address some of its needs. First, they acquired veteran receiver DeAndre Hopkins of the Tennessee Titans. Then they Landed edge rusher Josh Uche in a trade with the New England Patriots. However, it will be difficult for the Chiefs to fill all the holes on their roster before the league’s trade deadline on November 5. Yet they have done nothing to address arguably their most glaring problem: left tackle.

The Chiefs are widely known for having one of the best offensive lines in football. However, the unit’s weakest link is its blind-spot protection. Wanya Morris struggled to keep quarterback Patrick Mahomes upright. Kansas City’s operation and quest for a three-peat is collapsing without their franchise passer, making it a situation worth monitoring.

Morris has not played well this season, as evidenced by his 50.1 Pro Football Focus overall player rating. The second-year pro has been tough to watch, especially when playing alongside elite blockers like Creed Humphrey, Trey Smith and Joe Thuney. He was particularly bad in Kansas City’s Week 8 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, committing penalties and regularly allowing pressure.

Additionally, rookie tackle Kingsley Suamataia didn’t do much (if any) better when given the opportunity. While Morris hasn’t done anything to show he’s the long-term solution, neither has Kansas City’s 2024 second-round selection. Meanwhile, their performance is taking a toll on Mahomes and the Chiefs offense as a whole.

After seeing the Minnesota Vikings reach a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars for Veteran left tackle Cam Robinsonthe Chiefs need to be kicking themselves. Amid the Morris/Suamataia woes, Kansas City had an opportunity to make an external addition and solidify the most vulnerable spot on their offensive line.
