Are Mike Williams and Preston Smith playing this week? Latest update on the new Steelers

THE Pittsburgh Steelers made two significant additions to their roster ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, with the team making trades for wide receiver Mike Williams and edge rusher Preston Smith.

The Steelers had been in the market for a wide receiver since the offseason, so this trade was no surprise.

But the deal for Smith was at least slightly surprising, as the Steelers hadn’t been connected to any Edge Rushers via rumors. However, the move was understandable given Pittsburgh’s injuries at the position this season.

Both players rejoined the Steelers this week and were able to participate in practice, but it remains to be seen if they acclimated quickly enough to make their respective debuts with the Steelers in Week 10. Here’s the latest news on this front.

Are Mike Williams and Preston Smith playing this week?

Although the Steelers have not confirmed whether Smith or Williams will play this week against the Washington Commanderswe got a glimpse of one of the beat writers on the team.

According to Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in an appearance on The PM team on 93.7 The Fanhe is confident Smith will play due to the injury to edge rusher Nick Herbig, who was excluded Friday.

“I think Preston Smith is in a different situation, because I don’t expect Nick Herbig to play,” Fittipaldo said. “So I think they’re probably stuffing Preston right now, to get him up to speed with the playbook.”

As for Williams, Fittipaldo is not as confident and says that if the veteran adapts, he will be limited.

“Don’t expect much from Williams this week,” he added. “I think you’ll see that increase week by week. If I had to put a number on the number of snaps this week, if he dresses, I’d say 12-15.”

While wide receiver was obviously the Steelers’ glaring need heading into the trade deadline, edge rusher is currently a more immediate need due to Herbig’s absence.

Even if he is limited or doesn’t play at all this week, Williams will definitely be more involved as he gets acclimated. But for now, expect the Steelers to lean more on Calvin Austin and Van Jefferson, as well as George Pickens.
