The highly coveted FIDE World Chess Championship 2024 will begin on November 25 in Singapore. Winning contestant Gukesh D will compete for the world title against reigning world champion Ding Liren in a best-of-14 match. This will be the first time an Indian will play for a world title since Viswanathan Anand against Magnus Carlsen in 2014.

Gukesh has had a brilliant run in 2024 and is in great shape. He qualified for the final match of the 2024 FIDE World Chess Championship in win the candidates and get a place to challenge world champion Ding Liren after dominating the candidates with a score of 9/14. The 18-year-old lost just one match and became the second Indian to qualify for the FIDE World Chess Championship.

The FIDE World Chess Championship will begin on November 25 and continue until December 14. The tournament will take place at Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore.

What is the format of the 2024 World Chess Championship?

The tournament will be played in a classic format and will take place in the best of 14 matches. The rules and format of the 2024 World Chess Championship are slightly different from the 2023 edition. The player who wins 7.5 points will be crowned Champion.

The time control for each game in the classic part of the match is 120 minutes per team for the first 40 moves and 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with an increment of 30 seconds per move, starting from move 41. In the event of a tie after 14 matches, a tie-break will be played. The tie-break rules are as follows:

  • There will be four quick rounds of 15 minutes per team and one 10 second increment. The player will need to score 2.5 points or more to win.
  • If the score is still tied, then two quick games will be played with 10 minutes on each side and a 5 second increment. The player will need to score 1.5 points or more to win.
  • If the score is still tied, then two blitz games will be played with 3 minutes on each side and a 2 second increment. The player will need to score 1.5 points or more to win.
  • If the score is still tied, then a single blitz game with 3 minutes per side and a 2 second increment will be played. Whoever wins the game will win the match. If the game is drawn, then another single blitz game will be played with a reversed color. This process will be repeated until someone wins the game.

A draw will take place to decide which player will play with white and black pieces.

Players are not allowed to agree on a tie until Black’s 40th move. A request for a draw before this date is only permitted if a triple repeat or stalemate has occurred.

The total prize money obtained from the event is $2.5 million (Rs 20.8 crore approx). Each player will receive $200,000 (Rs 1.67 crore) for each game won, with the remaining prize money to be split equally between the two players.

In case of a tie-break, the winner will receive $1.3 million (Rs 10.83 crore approximately) while the runner-up will receive $1.2 million.
