Two key recruits did not practice

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Although the Green Bay Packers’ rookie defenders have made an immediate impact, their two big offensive picks continue to face injury-related obstacles.

During Friday’s practice, the last before Sunday’s matchup against the Chicago Bears, first-round pick Jordan Morgan and third-round pick MarShawn Lloyd did not practice.

On Fridays, reporters are only allowed to view the team’s lengthy pre-practice sequence. During those 15 minutes, Morgan rode a stationary bike while Lloyd was not seen at all inside the Don Hutson Center.

Morgan appeared on Thursday’s injury report with limited participation due to a shoulder injury; he had shoulder problems throughout the season.

Lloyd injured his ankle in his only regular season game, Week 2 against the Colts, and landed on injured reserve. He was designated to return Monday but was not added to the roster. His participation was limited Wednesday and Thursday due to ankle and hamstring issues.

The Packers have an opening on the roster following the Preston Smith trade. Coach Matt LaFleur indicated Thursday that it would go to Lloyd.

“I can’t wait to get him back in the fold,” offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said Thursday. “Obviously with the bye week, you go back and watch all the old film you had from the year, and the one game he played, you just saw his explosive potential, his quickness, his ability to reception.

“Very good player. He’s working on some things and he’s trying to get back as quickly as possible but, at the same time, we just have to make sure we’re smart with all this and everything. But yes, it works and I look forward to getting it back very soon.

The only other player who didn’t come out early in practice was defensive tackle Colby Wooden. He did not practice this week due to a shoulder injury.

Center Josh Myers, who missed the Detroit game with a left wrist injury, practiced for a third straight day. His ability to manage pain and block with some sort of protective wrap or cast will determine whether he returns to the lineup.

“Any time you can have your starting center there, the guy that runs everything, all the calls, everything like that, it’s very important, for sure,” Stenavich said.

Without Myers against Detroit, Elgton Jenkins moved to center and Morgan got his first NFL start. When healthy, Morgan had averaged about 24 snaps at right guard over the previous three weeks.

Starting defensive backs Jaire Alexander and Evan Williams, who were inactive against Detroit, practiced all week.

Recovering Alexandre would be crucial given the talent of Chicago’s receiversand the defense suffered without rookie Williams.

Quarterback Jordan Love participated fully all week and likely won’t be on the final injury report.

Love paced the Bears in both starts last year with five touchdowns and no interceptions.

“He was a dual threat for them,” Bears defensive coordinator Eric Washington said this week. “Really good arm talent, he could make a lot of throws. He was growing in terms of his ability to read the reports and get the football where it needed to go.

“Very quick release, but he also had that element of having to account for him as a rusher. It’s tough to defend when the second runner is a quarterback and all of a sudden now it becomes a posting issue or a posting circumstance for our defense. He has complete ability to continue to advance this offensive philosophy, and he will only get better.

For Chicago, the Bears will get a boost with the returns of left tackle Braxton Jones and right tackle Darnell Wright. They did not receive an injury designation in Friday’s injury report. Without them last week against the Patriots, rookie quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked nine times.

However, left guard Teven Jenkins is out.

Their best defensive player, defensive end Montez Sweat, practiced the last two days and is questionable.

This story will be updated after final injury reports are released on Friday. For now, here are Thursday’s reports.
