Lincoln dermatologist shares tips for healthy skin for National Healthy Skin Month

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The skin is the body’s largest organ, and CHI Health dermatologists say it’s essential for people to take good care of it.

While it’s easy to remember to apply sunscreen and moisturizer during the warmer months, Dr. Tyler Evans said skincare routines are just as important during the winter.

Dr. Evans said that during colder months, lotion may not be enough to keep your skin hydrated and protected. He recommends people use thick creams, which usually come in jars. He says this provides more moisture that will stay on the skin for longer.

Although sun damage is of great concern in the summer, doctors advise continuing to wear sunscreen during the winter. Dr. Evans recommends that people add sunscreen to their daily skin care routines.

“During these fall months, when the weather starts to change, we see people with problem skin start to have breakouts. So it’s very important to keep your skin hydrated by using thick creams rather than lotions to maintain this moisture barrier and protect the skin.”

Dr Evans said people should also carry out regular skin checks. There are two types of skin cancer that people should be aware of.

The first, non-melanoma skin cancer, is characterized by healing problems in areas like the head, neck or forearms.

The second type is cutaneous melanomas which appear as moles. He says if the moles are symmetrical, you should have them checked by a professional. Dr. Evans said if the borders of the mole are not smooth and are irregular, that could also be cause for concern. You should also consult a dermatologist if the color of the mole is dark black or multi-colored.

Finally, if you have had a mole for a while, but start to notice changes in its appearance in terms of size, shape, or color, you should see a dermatologist.
