A garment factory worker in Gazipur lost his life while working in a washing machine.

The deceased, Noyon Mia, 22, was an assistant operator at Giant Textile Limited in Gazipur. He lived in a rented house in the Memberpara area of the district.

His shift starting at 8 a.m. was supposed to end at 8 p.m. Saturday. But one of his colleagues asked him to stay longer to do additional work, said Mirazul Islam, additional commissioner of police, Gazipur.

“The next shift was not informed of Noyon’s presence inside the washing machine,” Mirazul said, adding: “Around 8 p.m., Noyon entered the washing machine to load fabrics The operator on the next shift saw the fabric in the washing machine and turned it over without knowing Noyon was inside.

Noyon became entangled in tissue and suffered burns in the hot water.

Around 3 a.m., when the operator went to collect the tissue, he saw Noyon’s body inside the machine and screamed. Other officials rushed over.

Contacted about the incident, Omaar Faruk, general manager of the factory, said: “We are shocked by the accident that occurred at our factory with one of our colleagues. We immediately informed the police and requested a thorough investigation into how this unfortunate incident took place. We are fully cooperating with the police.

“We also immediately formed an internal commission of inquiry. We also fully support the victim’s family. We stand with this family in this difficult period,” he added.

Ema Akter, Noyon’s wife, said factory authorities often made him work two hours beyond his scheduled shift.

“They regularly made him do extra work. His main job was moving fabrics, but he was assigned to the washing machine, without training or an operator,” she said.

She said her husband probably entered the machine without understanding how it worked.

Ema also said factory authorities handed over Noyon’s body to the police without informing the family. “I learned of his death in the morning.”

Sohel Rana, the factory manager, said Noyon was kept working overtime due to work pressure.

“The machine operator took a tiffin break while Noyon was loading the fabrics. When the operator returned and did not see Noyon, he assumed the machine was clear and turned it on,” he declared.

Abdul Latif, industrial police inspector of Gazipur-2, said Noyon was forced to work overtime and died due to negligence of factory authorities.

Abdul Halim, officer-in-charge of Joydebpur police station, said police recovered Noyon’s body on information and sent it to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

He said police had arrested eight factory officials for questioning. “Legal action will be taken based on the family’s complaint.”
