Driver crashes car into crowd in China, killing 35 people. Police say he was upset about his divorce

A man who authorities say was distraught over his divorce rammed his car into a crowd of people exercising at a sports complex in southern China, killing 35 people and seriously injuring dozens more , the police announced on Tuesday.

Police arrested the 62-year-old man, who is being treated for injuries believed to be self-inflicted, shortly after Monday night’s attack in the southern city of Zhuhai of China. The city hosts the annual People’s Liberation Army aviation exhibition, which opened Tuesday, and searches for what happened have been heavily censored for users behind China’s Great Firewall .

Outside of the controls, however, videos circulated on social media platform X. In several of them, dozens of people could be seen lying on the track of the sports complex, which is regularly used by hundreds of residents to run, play football or dance.

In one, shared by news blogger and dissident Li Ying, a woman says “my foot is broken.” That same video showed a firefighter performing CPR on one person, while others had to leave. Li, known on X as Teacher Li, posts information daily based on user submissions.

In addition to the 35 people killed, police said 43 people were injured.

China has seen a number of attacks in which suspects appear to target members of the public at random.

In October, a man was arrested after allegedly attacking children with a knife at a Beijing school. Five people were injured. In September, three people were killed in a stabbing attack at a Shanghai supermarket and 15 others were injured. Police said at the time that the suspect was having personal financial problems and had come to Shanghai to “vent his anger.”

In May, two people were killed and 21 others injured in a stabbing attack at a hospital in Yunnan province.

Police identified the man arrested in Monday’s attack only by his last name Fan, as is customary, and said he was unconscious and receiving medical treatment after being found in his car with a knife and injured.

He was unhappy with the division of financial assets during his divorce, according to a preliminary investigation, police said.

Chinese authorities appeared to tightly control information about the incident. Internet censors tend to take special care in cleaning up social media before and during major events, such as the aviation show or the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress.

For almost 24 hours after the attack, the exact death toll and injuries were unclear. On Tuesday morning, a search for the sports center on Chinese social media platform Weibo revealed only a few posts, only a few of which referred to the fact that something had happened, with no photos or details. Chinese media reports published Monday evening about the incident have been deleted.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Tuesday evening called for “strict” punishment of the perpetrators, in accordance with the law.

He also called on all local governments “to strengthen risk prevention and control at the source, strictly prevent extreme cases from occurring, and resolve conflicts and disputes in a timely manner,” according to the agency. official Xinhua press.
