Revered British audio manufacturer gives its popular turntable a Hi-Fi upgrade

THE Rega Planar 3 is a platinum icon. Originally released in the mid-1970s, it became a hit with budget audiophiles due to its superb sound quality and relatively affordable price. At the time, it was also unique among belt-drive turntables due to its minimalist design – largely thanks to its slim but rigid base – and stunning glass top.

Fast forward to the present day, and the British hi-fi manufacturer has released a modern version of its Planar 3. The model released in 2016 remains faithful to the original design but has been upgraded with newer components, such as a stiffer plinth and an updated tonearm. Audio tips say it’s “without a doubt” their best-selling turntable – it costs $1,125.

Well, Rega has just released a special edition model that is essentially an upgraded version of this best-selling turntable.

A special edition upgrade

THE Rega Planar 3 RS Edition shares a lot in common with the standard Planar 3 sold by Rega. It features the same pulley and belt drive system, 24-volt motor, striking glass top, and electronic speed control.

What’s different is that Rega has given the RS edition some upgraded components, as well as a fresh coat of paint, to promise an even more refined sound.
