Bears likely to face Commanders QB Jayden Daniels

The battle between No. 1 and No. 2 appears to be back on for now, if ESPN’s Adam Schefter is correct.

Citing an unnamed team official, Schefter reported Sunday that all signs point to Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels playing Sunday at 3:25 p.m. against the Bears.

Daniels, the second pick in this year’s draft, would then have the chance to face the No. 1 pick, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams.

Schefter quoted the team official as saying of Daniels: “He’s a badass dude.”

Daniels suffered a rib injury and left Washington’s win over Carolina last week after 10 games. He didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday, then Friday underwent a practice that coach Dan Quinn described as intense. Quinn told Washington reporters that Daniels “really pushed” in practice.

However, when the team’s injury report was released, Daniels was considered questionable and he had only limited practice.

Normally, limited workouts involve the individual skills portion of workouts and stretching, and sometimes a small amount of team play, if applicable.

So the gamesmanship seemed to be there, but if Daniels plays, it represents a significant improvement in athletic skills and a problem for the Bears in open field running situations. Daniels also has the highest completion percentage in the league at 75.6%. Daniels’ combination of accurate passing and 372 rushing yards in 66 scrimmages helped Washington lead the NFL in time of possession. His passer rating is 107.0.

Daniels is 127 of 168 for 1,410 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions.

Williams, the first pick, is 130 of 199 for 1,317 yards with nine touchdown passes and five interceptions for a passer rating of 88.7.

The Bears defense argued that it doesn’t matter whether it’s Daniels or veteran Marcus Mariota playing against them. Although very mobile, Mariota is not the breakaway threat that Daniels is. Last week, in leading a win, Mariota rushed 11 times for just 34 yards.

ADAM SCHEFTER’S STORY ON JAYDEN DANIELS

“I don’t care, honestly,” said Montez Sweat, the Bears’ point guard. “They’re both good with legs and they can both throw the ball outside of the pocket, so it won’t make any difference.”

However, Sweat saw something about Daniels in the film.

“I notice he likes to go out to the right and throw, and he likes to pass while he’s running,” Sweat said. “But I feel like he’s a very dynamic guy. He can go both ways and throw the ball. But yeah, he’s just a good QB.”

The Bears have given up 78 rushing yards to quarterbacks in six games, 58 from scrimmage according to NFLGSIS.com.
