QT updates regulations on maritime tourist transport

Qatar Tourism (QT) has announced updates to the regulations governing maritime tourism transport, including the licensing of maritime tourism boards and all categories (A, B, C) of maritime transport vessels.

In line with international best practices, QT has published a new classification guide for owners and operators of maritime tourist transport vehicles and has outlined the technical requirements and specifications necessary for the operation of these vessels. These updates are in accordance with Law No. (20) of 2018 on Tourism Regulation.

Category (A) vessels that do not meet the classification standards and technical requirements outlined in Version 1.1 of the 2024 Classification Guide will not be permitted to operate, be present or berth in the Doha Corniche area until all specified requirements are met. Categories of means of maritime transport: Category (A) – refers to vessels used only for short journeys; they operate in the Corniche area; Category (B) – refers to boats used for long voyages and operating beyond the Corniche area; Category (C) – refers to boats used for long voyages providing accommodation and meals (high-end and luxury boats such as yachts).

Individuals can only operate category (A), while categories (B) and (C) must be operated by approved tourism businesses. Owners and managers of maritime tourism transport offices, as well as ship owners and operators, have been required to ensure compliance with the new regulations within the stipulated deadline (August 25, 2024), and a grace period of three month has been extended in different countries. categories. QT regulates and develops the tourism industry, encouraging private sector investment and setting the strategic direction of the sector.

In a press release, QT Tourism Licensing Director Fahad Hassan al-Abdelmalek said: “In coordination with relevant authorities, including the Private Engineering Bureau, the Ministry of Transportation, the General Directorate of Security of Coasts and Borders and the Ministry of the Commune, it was decided to adopt procedures and standards for the practice of tourist maritime transport.

“These standards are designed for maritime means of transport intended for the transportation of tourists during sea voyages and have been developed in accordance with the best global principles and standards. This initiative aims to improve transparency, unify the sector, support Qatar’s maritime strategy and advance service excellence across the country, thereby providing an exceptional and safe experience for users of these services.

As part of its mandate, QT is overseeing the implementation of its 2030 tourism strategy with the aim of diversifying the country’s tourism offering and increasing visitor spending. Through these efforts, QT strengthens Qatar’s global presence and improves the tourism sector as a whole.
