Elon Musk starts paying voters again after DOJ warning

He’s back, friends.

PAC man

Elon Musk’s pro-Trump political action committee (PAC) appeared to be acquiesce to the warning of the Ministry of Justice to end it with the paying voters thing – until it starts again.

In posts on the social network which he owns, Musk announced Thursday evening that two other people had received checks for $1 million each after failing to do so on Wednesday, after the DOJ sent him a warning letter informing him that his plan likely violates federal election law.

Announced last Saturday during a Trump campaign stopthese gifts are apparently part of a voter registration drive that encourages people to go to the polls. As such, Musk’s “America PAC” randomly selects people in swing states to sign his agreement. petition for constitutional rights of free speech and gun ownership, and the billionaire insisted that paying petitioners is not the same as paying people to register to vote, which which is illegal.

“You can belong to any political party or to no political party,” Musk tweeted in response to author review Stephen King earlier this week, “and you don’t even have to vote.”

Shortly after Musk made the announcement, a group of former Republican lawmakers and officials sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Garland urging the DOJ to investigate the prices, which they say are unprecedented and potentially illegal.

It’s clear that the bipartisan approach caught the AG’s attention – even if it doesn’t appear to have caught Musk’s attention for very long.

Legal test

While these gifts are certainly unprecedented, legal experts are divided on whether or not they are permitted under the law.

‘I’ve gone back and forth on this,’ law professor at Columbia University Law School Richard Briffault said ABC. “It clearly violates the spirit of the law, but it’s not 100 percent clear that it violates the letter of the law.”

On the left coast, another law professor disagrees.

“Even if some of the other things Musk was doing were murky legal, this one is clearly illegal,” said Rick Hasen, a UCLA law school professor and political scientist who leads the Safeguarding Project. university democracy. wrote on his blog about electoral law.

Now that Musk is back, that question may well be put to the test — and with the presidential election just 10 days away, it’s almost certain it won’t be answered before the election.
