Mark Robinson, Josh Stein on the issues

As North Carolinians head to the polls, Democrat Josh Stein and Republican Mark Robinson make their final campaign pleas for the executive mansion.

This is a state-level race watched by national audiences from the beginning, but as the election season has progressed, the race has become less competitive in the polls and more controversial for Robinson.

The state’s top seat is open as current Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper finishes his second consecutive term. Cooper supported Stein, the current state attorney general, while Robinson worked to win over working-class voters who were looking for an authentic candidate in him, the current lieutenant governor.

The latest polls indicate a strong lead for Stein, with several showing he has a double-digit advance.

Mark Robinson, Republican

The 56-year-old has had a rocky road to Election Day, with multiple allegations of inappropriate rhetoric online and at campaign events. More recently, CNN claimed that Robinson had made racist and sexually explicit remarks on a pornographic chat room. He denies them and continued CNN. Despite his work to overcome these allegations, many of his aides left and Donald Trump, who had supported him earlier in the race, has since excluded him from campaign events.

His program rests on what he and his supporters call its authenticity. A Greensboro native, Robinson had a difficult childhood and worked several blue-collar jobs before catapulting into politics.

On these issues, education is also a priority for Robinson. He wants to increase teacher pay, but he is also a strong supporter of “school choice” and taxpayer-funded private school vouchers. He believes some public schools indoctrinate students, as demonstrated by his task force as lieutenant governor. FACTSwhich stands for Classroom Equity and Accountability for Teachers and Students. Robinson also expressed distrust in the use of federal funds for education in the state, as WRAL reported.

His political projects in favor of access to abortion have confused throughout the campaignbut more recently he has publicly stated that he supports what the legislature decides, namely a 12-week restriction adopted in 2023.

Josh Stein, Democrat

The 58-year-old is the current attorney general and is a Harvard-trained lawyer who has focused on public education and reproductive rights this election season. He has worked in politics and law for years, working as a state senator for District 16 and as a senior assistant attorney general.

Approved by Approved by Planned Parenthood Votes! In the South Atlantic, Stein does not support the stricter abortion restrictions that lawmakers have imposed in 2023. On the public education front, he is a strong advocate of fully funding public schools rather than ‘use taxpayer money to finance private school vouchers. Stein’s education platform also includes support for technical education and apprenticeship programs, allowing people to find work without reducing student debt.

During his tenure as attorney general, he worked to target the opioid crisis, calling on Congress to contribute millions of dollars to fentanyl scanners at the border and lead a fentanyl task force within the North Carolina Department of Justice. He also worked to keep young people safe by successfully suing Juul, an e-cigarette company, for marketing to young people and ending the state’s backlog of rape kits.
