Manchester City could pursue Martin Zubimendi signing in January

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City could try to recruit Liverpool’s summer transfer target Martin Zubimendi.

According to a report from Football InsiderManchester City could consider signing Martin Zubimendi to strengthen their midfield. Pep Guardiola’s side are interested in the Liverpool target’s services and are confident they can convince the Spain international to join England.

Zubimendi has been with Real Sociedad since childhood. He has come through the ranks at some pace and has been a constant fixture in their first team since the summer of 2020. The 25-year-old has already made over 200 appearances for them.

The defensive midfielder’s consistent performances had put him on Liverpool’s wishlist. The Reds were desperate for a new number six and were in talks with the Spaniard. They had agreed a deal with Sociedad and he looked set to move to Anfield, but Zubimendi ultimately refused.

The Merseyside club found themselves in no man’s land. Although several reports suggest that Liverpool remain interested In his services, they suffered a major blow as Manchester City entered the race for his signature.

City could look to lure Zubimendi

Guardiola’s side are looking to strengthen their midfield in the upcoming transfer window. Rodri suffered a serious knee injury at the start of the season. He should be out for a while. With the Ballon d’Or winner unavailable, City are a little short in the center of the park.

Although Mateo Kovacic is an ideal cover, the club members feel that they need an upgrade at this position. As a result, they prepared a list of potential targets and Zubimendi is on that list.

City could look to persuade the Spain international to move to England in January, even though he turned down the opportunity to move to Anfield just six months ago. Playing for one of the best teams in the world, especially under Guardiola, could be a big factor in luring the Sociedad star to Manchester.

The Spanish club were reluctant to lose him this summer after selling Mikel Merino. Even though their position has not changed, City are ready to test their resolve.
