play

President-elect Donald Trump is quickly build his cabinet before the 2025 inauguration.

Trump has tapped some well-known names in conservative circles to help him lead the United States over the next four years in the White House, but not all of them are politicians.

This week, the Republican president-elect added the names of Matt Gaetz, Marco Rubio, Tulsi Gabbard and Pete Hegseth to the list of those he wants to lead departments during his administration.

More names are sure to come as 2024 ends and Trump’s second and final term as president begins. Here’s a look at the appointees and the seats that will need to be filled.

Who else has Trump appointed to head government agencies?

In total, Trump has nominated eight people to fill the top positions overseeing multiple U.S. government agencies.

Here are the latest positions announced by Trump on Thursday:

Who is Matt Gaetz? What does the attorney general do?

Ancient Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla.was chosen by Trump for the role of attorney general of the United States. Gaetz, a staunch MAGA supporter, resigned his seat in the House of Representatives “effective immediately” on Wednesday after receiving the green light from Trump.

The Florida lawyer has been a member of the U.S. House of Representatives since 2017 and was re-elected to his seat, but it now needs to be filled.

The resignation also ended the House Ethics Committee investigation into Gaetz.

The ethics committee spent three years examining various allegations that Gaetz engaged in sexual misconduct and illegal drug use, accepted “inappropriate gifts” and granted special favors. Gaetz has denied the allegations. The panel was expected to decide whether its report on the matter would be made public on Friday, but the investigation ended as soon as Gaetz resigned.

Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., a ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, on Thursday asked the Ethics Committee to “come forward and transparently show us what they found, and then let the chips fall where they can.

Other lawmakers have spoken out about the released information, especially since Gaetz is being tapped for the high post and could make a difference in Senate confirmation hearings.

If confirmed by the Senate as U.S. attorney general, Gaetz would lead the Justice Department, which he has criticized in the past. He would also represent the United States in legal matters and give advice and counsel to the president and the heads of the executive departments of the government when necessary.

“I don’t think this is a serious nomination for attorney general,” said Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, according to THE UNITED STATES TODAY. “We need a serious attorney general and I look forward to the opportunity to consider someone who is serious.”

Who is Tulsi Gabbard? What is the DNI?

Former Hawaii GOP Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democrat who ran for the presidential nomination in 2020 and became a Trump supporter, has been named as Trump’s choice for the Department of National Intelligence.

“I know Tulsi will bring to our intelligence community the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career, defending our constitutional rights and securing peace through strength,” Trump said in a statement.

Gabbard, 43, is originally from American Samoa and was a rising star in the Democratic Party before her departure in 2022. She was an Army officer who deployed to the Middle East and later became a critic of the war in Iraq, which helped it gain credibility. with progressives, USA TODAY reports.

Gabbard’s intelligence experience pales in comparison to that of the current director, Avril Haines, who was deputy director of the CIA and deputy national security adviser before accepting the job. In addition to her time in politics, Gabbard was in the National Guard and deployed during the Iraq War with a field medical unit.
