No votes are cast outside of business hours at the unsecured Wicker Park voting site

HIGHLAND — Lake County election officials are investigating how a person managed to enter the Wicker Memorial Park early voting site Wednesday after it closed for the day.

A video posted to Facebook shows a woman wandering the Wicker Park Breezeway, passing closed voting machines and claiming — without proof — that the machines could still be used to vote.

LeAnn Angerman, Lake County’s deputy elections director, confirmed Friday that the Wicker Park early voting site was unlocked for about 30 minutes Wednesday before being secured again by election officials.

She said not only were no votes cast during that time, based on an immediate audit of voting records, but it was also physically impossible to vote using the voting machines without assistance of an election worker.

“The fairness and security of this election are our top priority,” Angerman said. “We take all of our concerns seriously. Election integrity is of the utmost importance to us. We are investigating this matter and will find the appropriate solution.”

According to Angerman, the Lake County Board of Elections is working with Wicker Park officials on short- and long-term solutions to ensure a situation like this doesn’t happen again.

She said no similar building security issues have been reported at any of Lake County’s 10 other early voting sites.
