Missouri AG investigates Google for censoring “conservative speech”

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey announced an investigation into Google on Thursday following allegations that the search engine censored “conservative speech.”

“I am launching an investigation into Google – America’s largest search engine – for censoring conservative speech during the most consequential election in our nation’s history,” Bailey said. job on X. “Google is waging war on the democratic process. It’s time to fight back.

A Google spokesperson told the National News Desk that the attorney general’s claims are “completely false.”

“Search serves all of our users, and our business is about showing useful information to everyone, regardless of their political beliefs,” the spokesperson said.

Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., announced a separate investigation into the search engine more than two and a half months ago. He accused Google of removing terms related to the first assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

“Google’s failure to provide suggestions related to the assassination attempt on President Trump on July 13, 2024 as part of its search function is another example of censorship against conservative voices,” Senator Marshall wrote in a letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

“The omission of suggestions regarding the most obvious and recent victim of an assassination attempt demonstrates deliberate discrimination against President Trump and users of your search engine,” the lawmaker continued.

He said Google had violated the “intent” of Section 230 of the Communications Act of 1934, which gives some legal protection to online service providers.

“Google presents itself as a search engine and aggregator, not a censor. If Google wishes to become a publishing house or publisher, then Congress could regulate accordingly by removing the hallowed Section 230 protections that your company has long used to silence conservative voices,” Senator Marshall wrote.

Google said in response that it is committed to being a trustworthy and reliable source of information.

“It’s important to note that autocomplete is a tool that helps our users search quickly,” wrote Mark Isakowitz, Google’s vice president of government affairs and public policy for the U.S. and Canada, in a letter.

“No matter what predictions are displayed at any given time, users can always search for what they want and easily access results, images and more,” added Isakowitz.
