“Almost inevitable” – Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson faces the ax after Lions mauling with new man already under construction

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson may not survive the bye week.

The Jaguars trailed the Detroit Lions 6-42 late in the third quarter of their Sunday matchup with five losses in six games to see the Jaguars fall to 2-9 and the No. 1 pick in next year’s NFL Draft seems to be the best scenario this season.

Owner Shad Khan hailed this team as the “best team” in franchise history.

But the results – and performances – are far from meeting expectations.

And the lamentable demolition of Sunday by the Super Bowl competitor Detroit Lions with backup quarterback Mac Jones under center, this looks like the straw that broke the camel’s back.

After signing a five-year, $275 million contract, Trevor Lawrence is not benched when healthy.

Pederson should therefore be Khan’s sacrificial lamb.

Before the Lions clash, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport quoted team sources say it was “almost inevitable” that a new head coach would arrive in 2025.

And with Week 12 being a perfect opportunity to rebuild, the nature of Detroit’s likely victory could force an early decision.

Quarterback coach Mike McCoy has head coaching experience and would seem a suitable choice to take the reins for the remainder of the season should Pederson receive his marching orders.

Whatever happens, the JaguarProblems will not be solved by a single change.

An alarming crisis dating back to the second half of last season has shaken the organization’s confidence.

“It’s all of us. Everyone’s in it,” a source told Rapoport.

Pederson has gone 9-8 over the past two seasons, but expectations are high in Florida.

Ironically, two of the opposing team’s coaches could be in the running for Pederson’s job in 2025.

Ben Johnson’s stock is rising after making the most of Jared Goff as offensive coordinator in Detroit.

And Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is reportedly open to taking on the head coaching role as well.

Jags general manager Trent Baalke is also believed to be fighting for his future.

With Lawrence on a mega-money deal, the Jaguars will likely look elsewhere if they land a high draft pick.

Colorado Buffaloes Two-Way Star Travis Hunter is an option, while Jacksonville desperately needs reinforcements on defense.

Trading with a team in need of QBs to acquire more capital would be a wise move.
