The small volumetric lamp rotates at 6,000 rpm

Volumetric displays are just cool. Combine a few LEDs, take advantage of the persistence of vision and you really get something. (Nick Electronics) shows us how to do it with its pretty little volumetric lamp.

The concept is simple. (Nick) built a small device to spin a small rectangular array of LEDs. A small motor in the base provides the required rotational motion at a speed of approximately 6,000 rpm. To power the LEDs as they rotate, the construction relies on coils of wire for power transmission, instead of the more traditional technique of using slip rings.

The build doesn’t do anything particularly fancy: it just lights up the entire LED array and spins it. That’s why it is a lamp, rather than some kind of special volumetric display. However, the visual effect is nice. However, we have already seen other high-performance volumetric displays. Video after the break.
