Mischa Johnson’s husband charged with her murder in Hawaii

On November 6, the U.S. Army Office of Special Counsel filed four additional charges against Private First Class Dewayne Arthur Johnson, stemming from the disappearance of his pregnant wife. Mischa Johnson last spoke to her family on July 12, 2024.

Michelle McCaskill, OSTC communications director, told Dateline in an email that the charges were brought “based on evidence obtained through the ongoing investigation.”

The investigation began three months ago when 19-year-old Mischa Johnson disappeared from Oahu, Hawaii. Data line reported about her disappearance in August as part of our “Missing in America” series, and spoke with her sister, Marianna Tapiz. Marianna says she and Mischa planned to meet for dinner the evening of July 12 to celebrate their pregnancy at the same time. Mischa was about six months pregnant and Marianna had just announced that she was also pregnant.

Marianna says Mischa never showed up at the restaurant for their dinner and when she texted her sister to ask where she was, she received this response: “The house wasn’t feeling good, sorry “.

“That doesn’t sound like my sister,” Marianna said. She also told Dateline that the family continued to receive text messages from Mischa’s phone until August 1, but they did not appear to be in Mischa’s usual style of text messages, either in terms of tone or punctuation. .

On August 19, 2024, a 25th Infantry Division Facebook post said that FPC. Dewayne Arthur Johnson had been placed in military custody in connection with the disappearance of his wife. The couple lived at Schofield Barracks on Oahu. On August 27, OSTC shared a press release describing the accusations against PFC. Johnson at the time, who “made false official statements, obstructed justice, and produced and distributed child pornography.”

A little over two months later, on November 6, the additional charges were prioritized. OTC Communications Director McCaskill told Dateline “the general nature of the additional charges relate to the murder of Mischa Johnson, the intentional killing of her unborn child, obstruction of justice and possession of child pornography.” .

According to McCaskill, Pfc. Johnson is in “pretrial detention pending a preliminary hearing.” McCaskill said in his email to Dateline that this is necessary before the charges can be referred for trial at a general court martial. “If the charges are dismissed, FPC. Johnson will be arraigned and the designated military judge will set the date for pretrial hearings and the trial.

McCaskill emphasized that “the accusations are allegations” and that “Pfc. Johnson is presumed innocent until proven guilty. She said no further details would be provided at this time due to the nature of the investigation, but confirmed to Dateline that Mischa Johnson’s body had not been found.

McCaskill also agreed to forward Dateline’s request for comment to PFC. Johnson’s military legal representation.

The Army Criminal Investigation Department continues to ask for the public’s help and is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for credible information leading to the recovery of Mischa Johnson. They are asking anyone with information regarding her disappearance to contact the Army CID Pacific Field Office at 808-208-0559 or submit a tip online.
