Campbell shareholders approve company’s flexible new name

NEW YORK – Campbell’s is ditching soup – at least apparently. And the change has now been given the green light by shareholders.

Campbell Soup Co. announced his intention to change his name just over two months ago, saying it instead wanted to be known by the (slightly shorter) name Campbell’s Co. Shareholders overwhelmingly approved the change Tuesday.

In a statement, CEO Mark Clouse said this “subtle but important change” would retain the company’s iconic name “while reflecting our entire portfolio.”

New Jersey-based Campbell’s hasn’t been exclusive to the soup business for some time. The company also owns brands like Prego sauce and Goldfish crackers – and has made a $2.7 billion acquisition from Sovos Brands, the maker of Rao pasta sauces, earlier this year.

Yet the 155-year-old food vendor is most famous for its namesake canned soups, adorned with red and white labels. Its new name won’t change that, the company says, noting that Campbell’s soup branding or packaging won’t be affected.

“We love soup and we always will,” Clouse said Tuesday. “The iconic red and white Campbell’s Soup labels that consumers love will be on shelves forever.”

The new name will officially take effect following the filing of an amendment to the company’s certificate of incorporation.

Campbell is far from the first try as a makeover. From Dunkin’ to KFC, a handful of other food companies have they also renamed themselves over the years – often removing mention of a specific item they were known for with a shorter company title, or even an updated logo, in hopes of emphasizing other activities .
